Some surgeons have even reported up to 40% of their injectable and Botox patients are now men. Men are more likely to browse online than to walk into a medspa or Dr’s office, so reaching the male consumer online should be a major goal for your Cosmetic surgery marketing in 2017 and beyond!
  2. Video and Mobile are here to stay. More than ever, Cosmetic Surgeons and Medspas are using video online. And these videos are being watched by people on mobile devices like phones and tablets. Youtube is the world’s second largest search engine after Google and many surgeons like the controversial Dr Miami using live video of surgeries in marketing their practices those practices that don’t adapt to these new trends will be left behind.
  3. More Competition From Medspas for injectable patients. With so much to do day to day in your cosmetic surgery or Medspa practice, it’s easy to let certain things like Keyword research and updates slip through the cracks.

In this article, I’ll discuss the 5 best converting Keywords for Cosmetic Surgeons based on my work with over 2 dozen Cosmetic Surgeons across the US and Canada.

We’ll also take a look at WHY having the right keywords and updating them frequently is important.

Why are Keywords important for Cosmetic Surgery Practices?

Before 2011’s Panda update, you could engage in what is known as “Keyword stuffing” which basically means that Google was looking at how MANY times your website had the keyword contained in it, rather than how RELEVANT it was to the search.

For the last 6 years, Google has sought to move from keywords to keyword phrases as its machines get better and better at understanding how people actually search and the words they use (typos included).

More importantly there is a difference between what those in the data biz call “Commercial Intent Driven Searches” or  “Informational Intent Driven Searches” those where people are just doing their research.

And this is where we run into issues as a Cosmetic Surgery Practice because as you the reader know Cosmetic Surgery is a rather long sales process where potential patients often want to gather a lot of information before making a decision.

So you’ll want to further refine your keywords to differentiate between those that are commercially driven such as “Cost of Breast Augmentation” and those that are informational such as “Breast Augmentation Recovery Time.”

We want to focus on Commercial driven search terms as those tend to have much better conversion rates.

The 5 Best Converting Keywords For Cosmetic Surgeons:

  1. Breast Implants
  2. Breast Augmentation
  3. Liposuction
  4. Rhinoplasty
  5. Tummy Tuck
The most searched terms for cosmetic surgery are NOT the best converting.

Ok, probably not a ton of surprises there.

But I want to show you something.

Google Trends Data Comparing Botox to Breast Augmentation

This is a Google Trends search I did comparing Botox to the # 1 converting Keyword of Breast Augmentation.

There are almost 4 x as many searches for Botox as there are for Breast Augmentation over the last 6 months.

In fact there are TWICE as many searches for the generic term “Fillers” as there are for Breast Augmentation.

That’s 2 X as many searches for “Fillers” a generic term for injectibles than Breast Augmentation had.

Now I should note that Breast Augmentation has a MUCH higher price than Fillers and Botox but that only explains some of the search volume inequality. Additionally Botox and injectible patients usually require multiple treatments per year leading to a much closer Lifetime Customer Value than one would realize upon first glance.

The numbers don’t lie.

There are exponentially more searches for Botox and Fillers than ANY other Cosmetic Surgery related keyword.

If you want more traffic, you want to start featuring Botox and other injectibles as your main keyword phrases.

Get More Cosmetic Surgery Patients Using Video

If you’re using video in your cosmetic surgery marketing, I want you to ask yourself a question.

Do the videos you use actually get more cosmetic surgery patients for your practice?

Are your videos getting you cosmetic surgery patients
Are your videos actually getting you clients or are they just cute like this dog video?

See while video is all the rage in cosmetic surgery marketing, 90% of the videos created don’t actually get more patients in your door.

On the other hand, If the thought of using video to get more cosmetic surgery clients conjures up images of sleazy East Coast Doctors posting live surgeries on Snapchat, hopefully this article will inspire you to consider using video in marketing your practice as it can be an effective technique without sacrificing your reputation.

Google Rewards Video

I don’t want to bore you with the details but since Google introduced “Universal search” which produces a mix of information and video in 2007, almost every major update whether it’s Penguin in 2015 or Hummingbird in 2013 have led to video results being rewarded with high search rankings.

Videos are 53 Xs more likely to appear on page 1 of a google search

In addition Youtube has officially been the 2nd largest search engine online since 2013.

Video is a Search Category
As you can see Video is its OWN search category on Google.

So, how does a cosmetic surgery practice use video in a way that actually generates patients and doesn’t make you look unprofessional?

I’m glad you asked, there are 3 ways to get more patients with video:

  1. Send Demonstration Videos To Your Email List. One of the easiest ways to use video that will actually be send trackable patients through the door is demonstration videos which you can host on Youtube for free. In a demonstration video you can show potential patients how to correctly use products or explain and services and procedures in more detail. Using your Email management system you can see who opened the email and who clicked on the video link and follow up with those clients later on if they don’t contact you for an appointment.
  2. Go Live. One of the best ways to use video to get patients is to do Live Q and As on either Facebook Live or Google Hangouts. These Q and As will allow potential patients who either didn’t have the time or were too embarrassed to set up an in office consultation ask their questions without worry. You can even ask the potential patient to call you during the live Q and A and start to set up an appointment in real time as many of my clients have done.
  3. Offer Skype, or Google Hangout Consults. The last way is where I believe the future of medicine is headed with companies like Plushcare  already providing medical consults for non threatening conditions over an App.  Ultimately I believe that is how most medical consults will take place and any steps you can take to be an “early adopter” of this kind of technology will allow you to get more patients in the door. You may even be able to charge between $20-60 for the consultation in addition to booking more procedures.

Most Cosmetic surgery practices are either not creating video content or are creating the wrong kind of content for social media sites that don’t have buyers like Snapchat where the average age is between 13-24 not exactly prime cosmetic surgery prospects.

Instead you want to use video in the 3 ways I listed above to actually get more cosmetic surgery patients.

Vegas Cosmetic Symposium 2017 Review

A few years ago, my girlfriend who is a Cosmetic Surgeon had a problem.

Even though she had great reviews and her patients were extremely loyal, she had trouble standing out online and getting new cosmetic surgery patients in the competitive Orange County marketplace.

So I started helping her create content and do some basic email and Adwords marketing.

Her practice really took off and she recommended me to several of her friends who had Medspas and surgery practices across the country in markets as diverse  Carbondale Illinois and Palm Beach Florida.

But they all seemed to have the same problem of out of control lead costs due to ineffective online marketing.

So having helped turn around 5-6 practices over the past few years, and enjoying the process and clients I decided to look into specializing my services for Medspas and Cosmetic Surgery Practices.

I dug deep into the data on Google Trends,  Looked into the most virally shared content on Buzzsumo and found the 10 surgeon and medspa sites with the highest ranking websites (some of them like Dr Paul Nasif were at the Symposium, I did not ask for a picture.)

There was a lot of bad marketing but I saw an opportunity to help a lot of good surgeons.

Which led me to the Vegas Cosmetic Symposium 2017

Well that and the fact that it was in Las Vegas where I now live.

Having been to hundreds of seminars over the years in all sorts of industries I knew what to expect, but I was still impressed by the production and scope of VCS at the Bellagio.

VCS 2017 consisted of 5, full 12 hour days not including the optional dinners and breakfast seminars.

The Symposium was fully catered and had delicious coffee available which definitely helped. I would have liked Diet Coke instead of the provided Iced tea but that says more about my soda addiction than anything else.

The seminars were broken up into different tracks I attended the Practice Management track which focused on marketing, hiring, etc.

I attended about 5 hours of lectures each day arriving at 9 and often not leaving until 7-8 after the cocktail receptions or dinners.

It took me a full week to get back on track so I feel my friends who flew in from other states or countries and had to be back at work Monday morning.

Overall the conference was awesome and I heard especially good things about the facial surgery track from the surgeons I spoke to at breaks and at the bar.

I met a lot of really interesting people from all over that I never would have met otherwise and learned a lot about surgeons and facility staff as a whole.

I even ended up getting a new client out of it.

I especially enjoyed certain talks like Anthony Youn’s presentation on hiring a PR person as a student and good friend of Ryan Holliday I had to chuckle about all of the free PR we’ve gotten clients over the years.

I also liked that there was a wide ranging discussion of things like hiring practices, how to host events and closing on consultations.

But the most fascinating part of the conference was seeing the relatively low level of marketing sophistication in terms of tracking, segmenting and using data. The stuff I’d been doing was a lot more sophisticated and I realized I was going to need to tone it down even though I was talking to a smart educated audience they know surgery and maybe a little about running a business and almost nothing about marketing.

Having worked a lot with very competitive online niches such as Real Estate, and E-Commerce I’d place the level of sophistication marketing wise around 2014 in the Cosmetic Surgery world and that’s actually a really good thing for Surgeons and Medspas because there’s a ton of room for improvement. Especially in regards to integrating data into marketing.

So overall it was a positive experience and I would attend again.

Having said all that I do think there are a few ways that the Symposium could be improved for next year.

1. Longer speeches. The average presentation was between 15-30 minutes and I felt as though many of the speakers were rushing through what they had to say. That one Minion girl’s presentation felt like it was on fast forward as I was trying to listen. I get that there’s a lot of information to get through, but one of the most common comments I heard from facility managers and other staff in the Marketing seminar room was that a lot of the information was similar. For example the presentation on “How to Disnify your practice” was very similar to the one on the “Now-How-Wow” presentation and they were about 90 minutes apart. Longer presentation times would allow speakers to get into the meat and give details rather than telling you what you need to do but not explaining how to do it. If the speakers were given 30-60 minutes they could actually get into processes and techniques and there’d be less confused faces.

2. More designated networking time. I understand that there were breaks in exhibit halls, and meals but the cocktail receptions and other times where I was excited to network and meet people often had presentations going on during them which made it difficult to network. Having a mixer on the first night or a reception with a shorter presentation and more time to network would make it easier to build connections and minimize the chances of people talking to you while you’re trying to eat.

3. More applicable advice. I don’t want to single anyone out here, and I know that the speeches were short but there was very little applicable strategy or technique given out during the over 20 hours of seminar I attended. In fact one presenter literally said ” Social media strategy is important, you have to have a strategy. So your strategy should be to have a strategy.” Direct quote. Also the facility managers I spoke to like Christine L were a bit more sophisticated in terms of social media than the presentations were assuming. Luckily no one was pitching too hard but I feel like every speech could have had at least one thing you could do RIGHT NOW. This is something I seek to do in every speech and blog I produce. I call it a “Big Idea” having done presentations since 2004 I know that it’s hard to get an audience to remember everything even if they are taking notes so I like to give 1 big easily applicable piece of advice in each speech. I also think with so much time to fill you don’t need to have multiple presentations from the same people especially when the presentations were fairly similar all 3 times. Though full disclosure I did apply to speak and didn’t get a response. Maybe next year. My speech would have been the best one and I say that with no Ego.

This would have been the crowd cheering for me, if I spoke. Lol

Overall the Vegas Cosmetic Symposium 2017 was a big success, I’m excited to see what they have in store for next year as the Cosmetic Surgery Community as a whole becomes more sophisticated about this online marketing thing.

 Neil Patel. Neil Patel is a content marketer, author and co-founder of several companies including Kissmetrics. Neil is known for his long form in depth blog posts and the “10x Rule” which states that if you want to be successful at creating content you need to create content that is 10x better than what is already out there. Neil is a lifelong entrepreneur dating back to his high school days and has been involved with online businesses since the first dotcom crash. Neil’s main areas of expertise are analytics and he has created and brought to market dozens of tools like the Crazy Egg which shows a live heat map of where website visitors

Erin Nelson. Erin Nelson is an editor at Contently one of the cutting edge content companies specializing in helping larger companies create great content at scale. There are several great content creators over at Contently but I chose Erin because of her focus on storytelling and women’s issues. Content Marketing is mostly a boys club so it’s good to include as many women who are creating great content like Erin as possible.

Rand Fishkin. The self proclaimed “Wizard in charge” at Moz, Rand Fishkin is one of the OGs of content creation, even going as far as to co-found inbound.com. Rand blogs about everything related to inbound marketing, analytics, content linking and more. He also has an extremely enjoyable travel blog. If you’re interested in learning the ins and outs of SEO and other topics from a man who literally wrote 2 books on it be sure to follow Rand.

Tom Webster. Tom Webster is the founder of Brandsavant a blog that focuses on using data to draw insights about consumer behavior. If you’re into cold hard numbers and statistics (like I am) then Tom’s the man. Tom has been studying consumer behavior for more than 20 years and has also served as the vice president of the firm that did the 2008 election exit polling. Tom also co-authored the book The Mobile Commerce Revolution and the longest running research series looking at and analyzing consumer usage of digital and traditional media. There’s not much Tom doesn’t know about how to use data to draw insights about your unique audience and how to reach them. Tom’s work can be a bit academic but I can guarantee it will help you produce content your audience will love.

Jay Baer. Jay Baer is the most retweeted person by content marketers and the 2nd most rewtweeted person by B2B marketers. Jay has over 23 years of experience in digital marketing. Jay focuses on working with larger companies like 32 of the Fortune 500 on how to interact with and benefit from online customer feedback. Jay’s blog Convince and Convert was named the # 1 content marketing blog of 2015. Jay also hosts the Social Pros podcast. Jay will show you how to use technology to get an unfair advantage in your marketing and customer service.

John Jantsch. John Jantsch is a speaker, consultant and the author of Duct Tape Marketing and the blog of the same name.   1. Everyone needs CHEAP Adwords. One of the biggest complaints I hear from small business owners is that Adwords is TOO expensive! Enter my favorite content marketing trend for 2017 RLSA Re-targeting! To quickly summarize this technique, you start by installing a Re-targeting cookie on your website, next you need a great piece of content that you can promote on social sites like Linkedin and Facebook. Once you promote that to 1000 people or so you can re-target the Adwords ads to only display to those who read your content and are 25% more likely to buy.   2. Pre-suasion. In his most recent book, Robert Cialdini the best selling author of “Influence” set his sights on what he believes will be the next big thing in marketing, Pre-suasion. He defines pre-suasion as what savvy communicators do before delivering their message in order to make it more effective. Pre-suasion is all about the process of arranging for your audience to be as receptive as possible BEFORE you even start pitching. All of this is even more crucial to an online business because you can arrange your website in such a way that it is extremely pre-suasive and here’s just one example from a client of mine: One of the tenets of attention is that when we are rushed, we don’t think about things deeply and instead take mental shortcuts. To encourage website visitors to sign up for a free chimney inspection we created a sign up box that pops up immediately offering a free consultation with a countdown clock on it. Because the offer is going to disappear in 10 seconds and the visitor is rushed 76% of visitors ended up signing up for the consultation!
  3. Going “Live” is going BIG. Live content whether on Facebook Live, Periscope or Google Hangouts is going to be HUGE in 2017. Live streaming has continued to grow each and every year since the 2014 World Cup set records, especially since Facebook is ACTIVELY promoting live content and making it easier to find, so you’ll want to start creating live content as soon as you can! Live content is engaging, low cost, and let’s you test ideas to create products or content that can be re-purposed later.
  4. The King Stays The King. Mobile Internet usage will continue to outpace desktop usage in 2017, and it won’t even honestly be that close as 51% of all Internet time is spent on mobile while only 42% is spent on desktops. Mobile Internet is here to stay and will continue to widen the gap between time spent surfing on our phones and time spent on our computers. That means you MUST optimize your website, emails and other online communications to be mobile friendly if you want to succeed in 2017 and beyond. One of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure that your website uses AMP a free open source initiative which helps you create mobilized content once and use it all over the internet.
  5. Serial-ized content. Have you listened to the record setting podcast Serial? Season 1 focuses on a murder mystery, and leaves you on a cliffhanger weekly. To serialize means to create content which builds on itself and has continuity the way a book does with chapters. Serializing your content allows you to build anticipation for your next blog post, or product release. Another advantage of serialized content is that it allows you to break up larger blog posts or videos and create more content from what you already have.
  6. Chat is getting smart. You should already know that live chat is preferred by customers, cuts down on expenses and increases sales. But with new “smart” chat systems you can do even more. Smart chat allows you to book appointments, harvest leads, even make sales right then and there. If you use a website to make sales, book appointments or get leads, you should seriously consider adding a “smart” chat system like Boldchat
  7. Expanding your social curation. One thing we should have learned from the election is that many people self curate entirely too much and are making important declarations based on flawed samples. It’s here that I will also respectfully disagree with this article which states that in 2017 marketing will get even more niche. One of the problems that has developed is an overreliance on ASSUMING that what we want or what our friends want is what ALL customers want.. If brands and companies continue to just create content for those with the same viewpoints, they are doomed to fail.

1. Content Samurai. You probably already know that you need to be producing video content, but did you know that Youtube is currently the 2nd biggest search engine online? Video also leads to better Search Engine Optimization, higher user engagement, and most importantly increased conversions! But in the past video was expensive or time-consuming to create and required expensive equipment and editing skills. Not anymore! Now you can use Content Samurai to create incredible videos in minutes with 0 editing or video experience required. 2.  Periscope. Live streaming is one of the best ways to engage with your audience. I would predict that in 2017 you start seeing timelines more and more frequently and they will become one of the new ways that content is curated in 2017.

Influencer marketing is a great way to build your brand and can lead to exponential results when it comes to getting followers. The problem is that influencers often vastly overestimate their worth, often do not keep detailed analytic information and are notoriously difficult to get ahold of. You know how after you watch a video on Youtube they automatically start playing another video they think you might like? LIMK does this for blog posts and other content on your website, and as we all know the more content a website visitor reads or watches the more likely they are to become a customer.

7. Pixelmator or Gimp – Articles with images recieve 94% more views than articles without according to marketing expert Jeff Bullas. However oftentimes when you are finding images for your articles they need to be enhanced, touched up or more. This leads to a lot of content creators spending hundreds of dollars on Photoshop which is notoriously difficult to learn. Instead of Photshop consider Pixelmator for Mac users or Gimp if you use a PC. Both of which can do 75% of the things you’ll actually need to do on Photoshop for a fraction of the cost. Trust me I wish I had known about these programs before I spent hundreds of dollars on Photoshop licenses and dozens of hours trying to learn the program. Learn from my mistake and save time and money with pixelmator or gimp.
